Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, has been selected for the Om Prakash Bhasin Award 2023 in engineering, including energy and aerospace.

The award recognises his contributions to power systems, renewable energy integration and smart grid technologies, areas that are central to India’s energy transition and grid modernisation.

Instituted in memory of industrialist Om Prakash Bhasin, the award is conferred annually for significant contributions in science and technology with demonstrable impact on national development. Over the years, it has honoured several leading scientists and engineers, including A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Raja Ramanna, K. Kasturirangan, K.L. Chopra, R.A. Mashelkar and K.S. Narasimhan.

Prof. Mishra’s work has focused on improving efficiency and reliability in power systems, particularly through the integration of renewable energy sources and the development of smart grid solutions.

Before taking over as Director of IIT (ISM), he held academic and administrative roles at IIT Delhi, including Associate Dean (R&D) and Dean at its Abu Dhabi campus. He began his academic career at Sambalpur University and later served at Biju Patnaik University of Technology.

He is a recipient of several honours, including the INSA Young Scientist Medal, the INAE Young Engineer Award and the NASI-Reliance Platinum Jubilee Award, and is a Fellow of professional bodies such as IEEE, INAE and NASI.

Officials at IIT (ISM) said the recognition underscores the institute’s expanding footprint in advanced engineering and energy research.
